Imagine, if you can, a mash up of Booksmart and Everything Everywhere All At Once. That puerile, surreal, random, stunningly imaginative and highly endearing film is this film. 

Pizza Movie has dropped on Disney+ with absolutely no explanation or description and that might be appropriate as there is no real explanation or description of this thing. I’m not sure a trailer or a round of cast interviews would help get it out there; it lives just to be discovered by curious viewers and for it to generate whatever responses it will get. 

It may not be for everyone, some might lose patience with it, but I really liked it. It is bonkers and it has a confidence it might not quite earn but I respect that and I had definitely had a lot of fun on the ride.

The plot involves a couple of college kids who take an unknown drug they find in their dorm (never a good idea kids) and end up on a really crazy trip while trying to get downstairs to pick up the pizza they’ve ordered. This quick premise does not do it justice though. That’s like saying that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is about two high school students who use a time machine to complete their history project; it is a spot on synopsis but it doesn’t really cover it. 

In fact I think I might have accidentally stumbled on something here. That’s it, if you want to know what this is then it’s Gen Z’s Bill & Ted. If that sounds like something you could get into then give it a go. 

Pizza Movie stars Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo (which is the one quantifiable thing it might be able to sell itself on) alongside Sean Giambrone (from the live action Kim Possible, which I only know existed because I looked him up on IMdB) and Lulu Wilson who I recognised from the TV show Modern Love. They totally commit to every element of the bizarre plot and credit to them for that. 

The brains behind it are comedy duo Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher (who IMdB also tells me is married to Karen Gillan). Together they have been Emmy nominated for their work on SNL but are breaking out with this and the yet unreleased (in the UK) Over Your Dead Body which with Jason Segal and Samara Weaving  (thanks again IMdB) will also get some attention at some point. They have definitely got my attention. 

Pizza Movie is almost some kind of genius.
