What is the meaning behind the new Star Wars film title?

.

It was announced yesterday that the name of the new Han Solo film would be Solo. This is just the latest in a line of clever and cryptic titles to have come out of the extended Star Wars movie universe recently and is ripe for analysis and speculation. Where does that come from and what could it possibly mean?

.

The first and arguably most obvious idea is that it has something to do with the main character. Maybe the word solo is attributable to him in a way we do not yet know about. Certainly he is a bit of a loner, smuggling his way from one end of space to the other with no human companion. Maybe it refers to the practice of playing cards against a number of team players with no one else by your side. We know that Han is a gambler, having won the Millennium Falcon from Lando in this manner, so there might be something to this.

.

.

Perhaps the single word title refers in some way to the man’s famous spacecraft. We are told that it is one of the fastest ships in the galaxy so it could be that it stands alone, unparalleled in this way. Alternatively it could be that after all of its modifications it is now totally unlike any other Corellian Engineering Corporation YT-1300 freighter and goes it alone in this sense.

.

.

It might go deeper than this though. Could it be that the adjective solo describes someone else in the larger story? Rey had been left on her own for years on the planet Jakku so is this an indication that Han is her father? If you take the second, third and fifth letter from Snoke and rearrange them you get the word ‘one’ which means the same thing as solo so it might turn out that Han is Snoke (you never saw them in the same room together) or Snoke is Han’s father. That would certainly explain his interest in young Kylo.

.

I am beginning to wonder if this all points toward Shmi Skywalker, Darth Vader’s mother. She was after all the ultimate single mother. Maybe we can expect to find out more about her history in this film. Or wait, the Sith always come in pairs so does this suggest there is something else out there that exists in a single form, an even more distilled version of pure malevolence?

.

.

It is also interesting that the title of this film continues a trend for highlighting the singular in the naming of the Star Wars movies. The Last Jedi suggests a solitary figure, there was only one Rogue One and it was THE Force that awakened not a whole load of forces. There is something in this for sure.

.

I guess we’ll have to wait until 2018 to find out where this title really comes from but they’ve certainly given us something to talk about.

Who is it they call Solo?

.

It doesn’t refer to the number of directors the film has had. That we do know.
