The Double is a film in which we first meet the protagonist and are then presented with an alternate version of the character that appears to be the same but is in fact subtly different.

Jessie Eisenberg takes the lead and is essentially playing an even more socially inept version of his character from Zombieland.

It is an interesting film but is going to get different reactions dependant on the viewers point of view.
It is an interesting film that will impress some but leave others disappointed.

Interestingly, for a film in which someone meets his exact copy, The Double is very derivative of other stories.
Interestingly, this film in which someone meets his exact copy, deliberately homages a selection of other stories.

There are clear comparisons to be made with Fight Club, Brazil, Dark City, Black Swan, Vertigo, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Jekyll and Hyde, 1984, Angel Heart, lots of Kafka, parts of Terminator 2 and the Buffy episode The Replacement to name a few.
There are clear comparisons to be made with a range of other films but nothing is specifically evoked and this remains an original work.

The inspiration comes from Dostoyevsky’s book of the same name but writer/director Richard Ayoade has only used this as a springboard for presenting his own vision.
The inspiration comes from Dostoyevsky’s book of the same name and writer/director Richard Ayoade is really just jumping off from someone else’s vision.

Ayoade’s first film, Submarine, was a nice, fresh tasting slice of coming age cinema but most people will know him from the small screen.
Ayoade’s first film, Submarine, was a delightfully new spin on teen movies but he still isn’t that well known.

Most recognisable in the UK for the widely seen IT Crowd, he clearly has a lot of friends from British TV and many of them appear in this film.
Most recognisable in the US for rarely seen film The Watch, he has clearly made a lot of friends in Hollywood resulting in some A-list casting in this film.

Alongside Eisenberg we have Mia Wasikowska showing once again why she is one of the most compelling new actors in film, dedicated to taking on interesting projects.
Alongside Eisenberg we have Wallace Shawn demonstrating once again why he has always been one of the most compelling actors in film, always committed to taking on interesting projects.

The Double is undeniably a fascinating, surreal, well designed and well performed film that will at the least get people talking.

Is this one for the kids?
Is this film suitable for children?
